Miscellany
This is shameful. I like directors who don't hold themselves slave to the original, but this is waaaay to far. "Jane Austen most likely made it backstory for a reason."
I never really appreciated mothers who rock fussy babies until yesterday. I was babysitting a ten-month old, who was very clingy, and had decided that I was the least scary of our family. He didn't like it when I sat down, so I found myself walking around for two hours with a baby who was on the verge of tears. There is nothing quite like it, and I have higher respect now for my mother, and others, who rocked us when we were small.
Oh weather? Weather? It is June now, did you know? That means you can stop raining. Rain is good...but not for a whole week.
While at the lunch table two days ago, I learned something new about my siblings:
Adaon: ...Iceman, do you realize how poisonous those are?
MTW: Yeah, you could kill Frank!
MerryK: Who on earth is Frank?
Adaon: He's a spider that we've been feeding bugs to.
MerryK: You named him?
MTW: Yeah, and we fed him George the Potato Bug.
MerryK: (shakes head and sighs)

You'd never done that before?

But it's a movie. It has to be different. I don't see why you should have any objection to a director adding something in. "Films should be different from the book." And perhaps it will make for a "good scene." And maybe the director thinks those scenes would "fit the book perfectly."
:-D (If you want to know where those quotes are from, it's message #1098 on SI)
Oh, and for anybody else, I don't really think any of that. I think it's really quite shocking, and distressing.
I've held fussy babies before, but never for two hours straight. Usually it was with my siblings, while mom took a shower, and that was only for twenty minutes.

Different, yes, not more gross, though. (Besides, Jane Austen fans are the ones most likely to watch this four-part miniseries, so he should cater to them) Yes, I know our definitions of gross differ (I don't think the final scene in P&P is gross), but I think almost everyone who likes S&S would object to this. Besides, if this bit of news is foreshadowing at all, the movie will be different in more ways than one. Hopefully in better ways.
I like tasteful differences. ;-)
Well, tasteful is all a matter of opinion, you know. I don't think the majority of the changes in the new P&P were tasteful, at all. Someone else might think the differences in S&S "tasteful."
Playing devil's advocate is fun, but I must say that I really hope he doesn't do anything *major* to it. Although, I suppose, doing stuff with their storyline isn't quite as bad as completely messing up a different person's storyline (like, say, Eleanor's). But I still object very strongly, and am deeply disgusted.

Poor George the Potato Bug. *shakes head sadly*
I hope Frank is okay, though.
